Sett Valley Trail and Lantern Pike

The Sett Valley trail is a scenic walking trail on the edge of the Peak district which links Hayfield with New Mills. It’s also popular with cyclists and horse riders due it its easy terrain and beautiful countryside. Sett Valley Trail follows an old railway line and is also part of the Pennine Bridleway National Trail. Lantern Pike is a hill just outside of Hayfield which is owned by The National Trust.

If you link the two places together, it makes a lovely walk. We have two walks on the Derbyshire Walks app which take you along the Sett Valley Trail and up to Lantern Pike.

Sett Valley Trail and Lantern Pike walk
4 miles

This relatively short but quite energetic walk starts from the once very busy town of Hayfield and travels on the Sett Valley Trail past the small Birch Vale Reservoir where you can admire the many water birds before you start your forthcoming hill climb. The route takes you up to Lantern Pike where you will be rewarded with wonderful views before descending back down towards the village of Little Hayfield where you could locate the local pub for refreshments before continuing. The final part of the walk takes you along a quiet lane back to Hayfield where there are a number of pubs and cafes for refreshments.

Sett Valley Trail, Birch Vale Reservoir and Lantern Pike longer walk
7.25 miles

This varied walk starts from the once very busy town of Hayfield and travels on the Sett Valley Trail past the small Birch Vale Reservoir which is set within some beautiful scenery. The route then takes you up towards Lantern Pike where you will have lovely views to admire as you walk. You then continue over lovely countryside up across to the vast heather clad fields of Middle Moor. Here you will have wonderful views over the valley below. The final leg of the walk takes you back to Hayfield on the old Snake Path. Be aware, there is a small amount of road walking and a busy road to cross. This walk is quite energetic with a number of climbs and descents! As a well earned reward, there is a variety of refreshments to be had in Hayfield.
